Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.
DuraFlex Chimney Cap Installation: The San Antonio Owner’s Guide
A DuraFlex chimney cap installation in San Antonio typically runs $340 to $690 installed, depending on the cap model and what the flue tile looks like once we’re up there. We stock DuraFlex-compatible caps on our trucks, and most swaps take 60 to 90 minutes once our technician is on the roof. Owners usually discover the problem the hard way: a rainy week, water streaks on the ceiling, or a smudge of soot at the top of the firebox that wasn’t there in the spring. Sometimes the cap simply rusted through after years of Texas sun, and by the time you notice, the mesh is already letting birds, squirrels, or roof rats into the flue. San Antonio chimneys deal with hard sun and sudden downpours, and a failed cap turns both into interior problems fast. Ruben Castellano and our crew have replaced caps on everything from 1990s track homes in Stone Oak to older brick fireplaces in Alamo Heights, so nothing surprises us anymore.
Which DuraFlex Models This Applies To
DuraFlex makes two cap families you’re likely dealing with: the standard round cap for their 316Ti stainless liner systems and the top-plate cap assemblies paired with multi-flue installations. The standard round cap fits DuraFlex’s 4-inch through 8-inch smooth-wall and corrugated liner diameters. If you still have the original cap, check the underside for a stamped size (usually “DF6” or similar, meaning a 6-inch liner). No stamp? Measure the outside diameter of the liner stub itself, because measuring the flue tile with your liner already removed gives the wrong number. The top-plate assembly is different: it uses a flat stainless plate cut to the crown dimensions with a bolt-on cap that matches the liner diameter, and it’s what we typically install on chimneys with two flues or an oddly shaped crown. Here’s the compatibility gotcha: DuraFlex’s standard round cap collar is slightly taller than the knockoffs you’ll see at big-box stores, so an aftermarket cap made for generic flex liners can sit too shallow and wobble. We install genuine DuraFlex-compatible caps so the fit is right, but if budget matters and the liner is a common size, we can install a quality aftermarket equivalent with the same wind rating. Either way, we’ll show you the difference before anything gets bolted down. Alcott Chimney San Antonio is an independent service provider, not a DuraFlex dealer, and we also stock parts for HeatShield and Gelco systems.

Signs Your DuraFlex Chimney Cap Installation Is Failing
Here’s what we see most often on San Antonio chimneys when a DuraFlex cap or its mounting hardware has given up:
- Water staining around the chimney chase or ceiling below it. Most “roof leaks” near the chimney turn out to be failed cap seams or missing caulk at the cap-to-liner joint. The cap rusts through at the weld points after 8 to 12 Texas summers, then every rain storm becomes a slow drip into the chase.
- Chirping, scratching, or flapping sounds coming from inside the flue. This means the mesh screen has torn or pulled loose at the frame. Birds and squirrels get in fast, and San Antonio’s chimney swifts are persistent. Once they nest, you need a sweep plus a cap replacement, not just the cap.
- Visible rust streaks running down the liner from the cap base. This isn’t cosmetic. When the cap collar corrodes, it expands slightly and breaks the seal against the liner. That gap lets water run down between the liner and the old flue tile, which is how masonry damage starts.
- Debris or leaves accumulating inside the firebox after a storm. A cap with missing or bent mesh lets wind-driven rain and tree litter blow straight down the flue. We see a lot of this in neighborhoods with mature live oaks, like Terrell Hills and Monte Vista.
- The cap itself tilts or sits off-center when viewed from the ground. That usually means the mounting screws have backed out or the crown cement has crumbled around the base. A tilted cap lets water pool on one side and accelerates rust, so don’t wait on this one.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
In San Antonio, expect a DuraFlex-compatible chimney cap replacement to run $340 to $690 installed. A standard round cap for a 6-inch liner falls at the lower end, around $340 to $440. The upper end covers multi-flue top-plate assemblies, caps for oversized liners, or jobs where the crown needs patching before the new cap goes on. The price includes the cap itself, mounting hardware, crown inspection, and cleanup of any debris knocked loose during the swap. You’ll get a written price before we touch anything, and every repair carries our written guarantee: if the cap works loose or anything related to the installation fails within a year, the second visit is free. That’s the 365-Day Done Right Promise, and we don’t treat it as a sales line. It’s just how Ruben runs a job.
| DuraFlex Cap Type | Installed Price Range (San Antonio) | Typical Job Length |
|---|---|---|
| Standard round cap, 4 – 6 inch liner | $340 – $440 | 60 minutes |
| Standard round cap, 7 – 8 inch liner | $410 – $520 | 75 minutes |
| Top-plate assembly, single flue | $480 – $610 | 90 minutes |
| Top-plate assembly, multi-flue with crown patch | $580 – $690 | 2 hours |
DIY or Call Us?
Working on a roof in San Antonio’s summer heat with a chimney cap in one hand is not a weekend project we’d wish on anyone, but we’ll be straight about what’s realistic. If you’re just confirming the cap is the problem, from the ground you can look for visible tilting, rust, or missing mesh with a pair of binoculars. That costs you nothing and helps you describe the issue when you call. But swapping the cap means ladder work on a roof, often a steep pitch on older San Antonio homes, and the actual removal involves cutting through old crown cement while balancing on the ridge. That’s the point where we step in. A cap installed even slightly crooked lets water run under the collar, and you won’t know until the next ceiling stain. Call (903) 515-5079 if you’ve confirmed the cap is suspect. We’ll quote it over the phone, and our technician will show you the old cap before setting the new one.
FAQs
A quality DuraFlex-compatible round cap lasts 10 to 15 years in our climate before the mesh or weld seams start to go. San Antonio’s UV exposure hardens the finish faster than coastal air would, and caps on west-facing chimneys tend to fail a few years sooner than shaded ones. Top-plate assemblies often outlast the cap itself, since the plate takes less direct rain. If your cap is pushing a decade and you see rust at the seams, plan the replacement before you find water inside. Call (903) 515-5079 for a free estimate on a swap.
Usually no, and we’ll tell you that honestly rather than charge you for a patch that fails in a season. If the mesh has torn but the frame is solid, we can sometimes secure a replacement screen. But rusted seams or a loose collar mean the cap is end of life, and installing a new one costs less than two repair visits. We’ll show you photos of the damage before recommending either path.
Most single-cap swaps on a San Antonio home take 60 to 90 minutes from ladder up to ladder down. Multi-flue top-plate assemblies with crown repair run closer to two hours. You don’t need to be home for the whole job, but someone over 18 should be present for the first few minutes so our technician can show you the old cap and confirm scope before work starts.
Our vans carry standard 4-inch through 8-inch DuraFlex-compatible round caps, plus top-plate assemblies for the most common San Antonio crown sizes. If your liner is an unusual diameter or the crown needs a custom plate, we order and have it within a few business days. We’ll confirm before the visit whether we can complete the job the same day or need to schedule a return trip.
