Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.
Olympia Chimney Chimney Cap Installation: The San Antonio Owner’s Guide
A new Olympia Chimney chimney cap, installed in San Antonio, typically runs $285 to $520 for a standard single-flue setup. We keep Olympia Chimney-compatible caps and mounting hardware on our trucks, so most installs happen in a single visit. Most owners discover the cap has failed after a rainstorm, when water starts streaking down the fireplace wall, or when a bird gets itself trapped in the flue and starts flapping against the damper at 6 a.m.
If your cap is rusted through, missing its screen, or rattling loose in a good wind, this page will tell you exactly what to expect, what the part actually costs, and when it makes sense to replace the whole thing instead of patching it.
Which Olympia Chimney Models This Applies To
Olympia Chimney builds caps for two broad categories: their stainless steel factory-built chimney systems and their masonry chimney product line. The stainless systems use a locking tab design that sits inside the flue opening and tightens with a band. The masonry line uses a slip-over base that fits standard rectangular and round terra cotta flue tiles, usually 8×8, 8×13, or 13×13 inside San Antonio homes built from the 1950s through the early 2000s.
Here’s the compatibility gotcha most people run into: the Olympia Chimney lock-tab caps from the 1990s and early 2000s do not interchange with their newer manufactured caps. The tab spacing changed, and forcing an old cap onto a newer flue or vice versa leaves you with a cap that spins freely. When we quote a job, we take the old cap down before ordering anything, because the model number printed on the underside is the only reliable way to match it. We’re an independent San Antonio service provider, not affiliated with Olympia Chimney, so we stock their common sizes and work with aftermarket stainless equivalents that match their spec exactly when the OEM part is discontinued.
Styles & brands we work with

Signs Your Olympia Chimney Chimney Cap Installation Is Failing
- Water streaks or staining on the fireplace wall. The cap’s soldered seam or the screen-to-hood joint has opened up. Rain gets through, runs down the flue wall, and shows up as a rust-colored line on brick or drywall.
- Rattling or creaking during windy days. The mounting tabs have loosened or corroded. In San Antonio’s spring storm season, this is the one we hear about most, and it usually means the base is fatigued, not just loose.
- Bird sounds or nesting debris at the damper. The mesh sidewalls on Olympia Chimney caps are sturdy, but a determined grackle will tear through a screen that’s already thinned from years of hot flue gases. Once the screen opens, the cap is compromised.
- Visible rust through the stainless exterior. Olympia Chimney uses a 430-grade stainless on their standard caps, which is fine for cool climates. In San Antonio’s humidity and occasional salty Gulf air, that grade pits and rusts faster than the 316 stainless we prefer for replacements.
- A cap that lists or sits off-level. The base has shifted, usually because the flue tile crown beneath it has spalled, or the original installer torqued the band unevenly. The cap itself may be fine, but the mounting surface is the real problem.
Replacement Cost & What’s Included
For a standard single-flue Olympia Chimney replacement in San Antonio, you’re looking at $285 to $380 installed, assuming the flue tile is sound and we’re swapping cap for cap. If the old base is fused to the tile with rust or the tile crown needs a patch, the job lands closer to $450 to $520. Larger custom caps, multi-flue layouts, or homes in neighborhoods like Monte Vista with older, odd-sized clay tiles push toward the top of that range.
Every quote includes the cap, the stainless mounting hardware, removal and disposal of the old unit, and a written price before we touch anything. The repair carries our written guarantee, and if the cap fails within a year, the second visit is free under our 365-Day Done Right Promise. You’ll know the technician’s name and see their photo before we arrive, and that technician will show you a photo ID badge at the door. That’s the Threshold Standard, and Ruben Castellano has run Alcott Chimney San Antonio on that rule since 2002.

The honest split is this: if you can safely reach your roofline with an extension ladder and you just want to inspect the cap, snap a few photos of the underside and the model stamp, and send them over. That saves a trip if we can identify the part from the driveway. What you should not attempt yourself is removing a corroded cap from a live flue. The mounting tabs can snap under load, the cap can swing on its tether line, and San Antonio’s tile roofs are unforgiving in the summer when they’re hot.
If the cap is loose, leave it until we can get there. Call (903) 515-5079 and we’ll schedule the swap, and if you have the photos, we’ll bring the right part the first time.
FAQs
The standard 430-grade stainless caps typically last 8 to 12 years in San Antonio’s humidity before rust compromises the mesh or the mounting tabs. The 316 stainless models we recommend as replacements usually go 15 to 20 years. Call (903) 515-5079 and we’ll tell you which one you have now.
Spot-soldering a small seam split is possible, but once the screen mesh has holes or the mounting tabs show corrosion, repair buys you one season at best. We quote the repair honestly and tell you when replacement is the cheaper move over two years.
Most single-flue cap replacements in San Antonio take 45 to 90 minutes from ladder up to ladder down. The removal of the old corroded unit usually takes longer than installing the new one.
We carry the most common locking-tab sizes and the standard 8×8, 8×13, and 13×13 masonry slip-over bases. If your flue is an odd size or the model stamp is discontinued, we order the exact match or a 316 stainless equivalent and return within the week. We also stock parts for DuraFlex, HeatShield, and Gelco systems.
