Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.
Famco Chimney Sweep in San Antonio: What to Know First
We provide independent Famco chimney sweep service across San Antonio, typically completing a standard sweep and Level 1 inspection in 60 to 90 minutes. A routine Famco fireplace or stove sweep runs $189 to $289 before any repairs, and every job includes a written price before we start. If you own a Famco wood-burning fireplace or stove that hasn’t been swept in over a year, this page explains what we find, what it costs, and how we handle repairs without voiding your warranty. Call (903) 515-5079 to schedule.
How Famco Products Fail – and How We Fix Them
- Famco Zero-Clearance Fireplace (ZC Series) – creosote buildup at the throat. The ZC series, common in San Antonio homes built in the 1990s and early 2000s, has a narrow throat above the firebox. Creosote collects there faster than in open masonry chimneys, and we regularly find 1/4-inch glaze within 18 months of the last sweep. We remove it with rotating wire brushes sized to Famco’s flue dimensions, never chemical logs alone.
- Famco Freestanding Wood Stove (FS Series) – baffle warping from high-heat burns. The fiberboard baffle near the top of FS-series stoves warps when owners burn pine or oak at full throttle during cold snaps. A warped baffle changes draft and sends more soot into the flue. We check baffle alignment on every Famco stove sweep and tell you plainly if replacement is needed, with an aftermarket equivalent that matches OEM specs when warranted.
- Famco Insert (INS Series) – failed door gasket causing smoky startups. A worn door gasket lets air in where it shouldn’t, which pulls smoke into the room on cold startups and encourages creosote formation. This is one of the most overlooked causes of a smoky Famco insert. We test the gasket with the dollar-bill method during the sweep and replace it with a graphite-impregnated rope gasket cut to Famco’s channel width.
- Famco chimney caps and spark arrestors – San Antonio storm damage. The thin-gauge mesh Famco uses on some stock caps rusts through after a few years of Hill Country thunderstorms and summer humidity. We replace damaged caps with stainless aftermarket units sized to the flue, which outlast the original and keep rain out between sweeps.
- Famco firebrick and refractory panels – hairline cracks from moisture. San Antonio’s humidity swings cause small cracks in Famco’s refractory panels, especially in homes where the fireplace sits unused all summer. Hairline cracks aren’t urgent, but they worsen with heat cycling. We document them with photos during every sweep and give you a straight answer on whether to repair now or watch it for another season.
Styles & brands we work with

Our Famco Chimney Sweep Process
- 1
Call and book. A live person answers. You’ll get the technician’s name and photo before we arrive, and that technician shows a photo ID badge at the door.
- 2
Setup and floor protection. We lay drop cloths from the door to the fireplace and set up a HEPA-filtered vacuum. No soot dust settles on your furniture.
- 3
Initial inspection. We check the firebox, damper, baffle (on stoves), door gasket, and the flue from below with a mirror and light. Photos document what we find.
- 4
Mechanical sweep. We run rotating poly or wire brushes through the full flue length, sized to Famco’s liner diameter. Soot and creosote fall into the sealed vacuum, not your living room.
- 5
Secondary check and parts decision. After brushing, we inspect again. If we see a cracked baffle, worn gasket, or damaged cap, we show you the photo, quote a written price, and install only after you approve.
- 6
Cleanup, test, and guarantee. We vacuum the firebox, test the draft, and walk you through what we found. Every repair carries a written 365-day guarantee; if it fails, the second visit is free.

Why San Antonio Homeowners Call Alcott Chimney San Antonio for Famco Work
Ruben Castellano has been working on Famco fireplaces and stoves in San Antonio for well over a decade, including units in Alamo Heights limestone homes and newer builds near Stone Oak. He and our crew know which Famco series shows up in which neighborhoods, and we stock gaskets, caps, and baffle equivalents for the most common models. When a Famco part is on backorder or discontinued, we specify what actually works from professional trade brands like DuraFlex, HeatShield, and Gelco, and we show you the reason before we install anything. Every technician who arrives at your door is background-checked, identity-verified, uniformed, and announced to you by name and photo beforehand, per the Threshold Standard. And every repair carries the 365-Day Done Right Promise: if it fails within the year, we come back and make it right at no charge.
FAQs
No. A routine chimney sweep using brushes sized to Famco’s flue does not void any Famco warranty. We do not modify the unit or use chemical cleaning logs that leave residue. We are an independent Famco service provider and follow practices that preserve your warranty coverage.
Once per year if you burn one to two cords of wood per season, or every 18 to 24 months for occasional use. San Antonio’s humidity accelerates creosote hardening between burns, so even lightly used Famco units benefit from an annual sweep. Call (903) 515-5079 and we’ll tell you if your unit is due based on what we see.
We source OEM Famco parts when they are available through our distributors. When a part is discontinued or backordered, we specify a quality aftermarket equivalent from brands like DuraFlex or Gelco that meets the same performance spec, and we show you the comparison before we order. You’ll never get a mystery part you didn’t approve.
Creosote builds up along the flue walls and can ignite at around 2,000 degrees Fahrenheit, which is hot enough to crack a liner and spread into the home’s framing. In a Famco zero-clearance fireplace, the narrow throat concentrates creosote near combustible materials. The risk is real but manageable, and a sweep costs less than most insurance deductibles. To schedule, call (903) 515-5079.
Most sweeps are booked within a few days, and we work around your schedule, not ours. If you smell smoke inside the house or see flakes of creosote falling into the firebox, call us and we’ll tell you whether it can wait or needs immediate attention.
