Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.
Gelco Chimney Cap Installation: The San Antonio Owner’s Guide
A Gelco chimney cap installation in San Antonio typically runs $245 to $620 installed, depending on the cap model, flue size, and roof access. We stock Gelco caps and stainless steel mounting hardware on our trucks, so most jobs are done in a single visit. The part usually fails quietly. You spot the problem when rainwater streaks the brick below the crown, birds start making noise inside the flue, or you notice rust-colored stains on the cap itself during a routine look at the roofline.
Gelco builds a solid product, but no cap survives forever against Texas sun, hail, and the occasional wind gust strong enough to lift patio furniture. When it goes, you want someone who knows exactly what you have up there and won’t invent problems. That’s what this page is for.
Which Gelco Models This Applies To
We install and service the full Gelco line that’s common in San Antonio homes: the Gelco Standard Single-Flue Cap, the Gelco Deluxe Multi-Flue Cap, and the Gelco Draft-Increasing Cap for fireplaces that fight backdraft on windy days. The hardware kits differ between models, and that’s where we see the most confusion.
Here’s the compatibility gotcha most people run into: Gelco caps use a pressure-fit mounting system with stainless steel tension bolts, not the slide-on collar style of cheaper box-store caps. If you’ve bought a universal cap hoping it would fit your existing Gelco base, it almost never seats correctly. The flue tile measurements have to match: 8×8, 8×13, 9×13, and 13×13 are the most common in San Antonio’s older stone and brick homes. Bring us a photo of the cap and the flue tile dimensions, and we’ll tell you before the truck rolls whether we have the right Gelco match on board.
We only install Gelco caps and components. No off-brand substitutions that look right in a photo but warp within two summers. Alcott Chimney San Antonio is an independent service provider, not a Gelco company, but we carry their caps because they hold up better than most in our climate.

Signs Your Gelco Chimney Cap Installation Is Failing
- Rust blooms on the cap surface or seams. Gelco caps are galvanized steel with a powder-coated finish. Once the coating gets scratched or pitted, usually by hail, the galvanized layer underneath starts oxidizing. You’ll see brown-orange streaks down the sides of the cap within a few months.
- Water staining on the chimney crown or brick below the cap. The cap’s drip edge is designed to push rainwater away from the flue. If the seal between the cap collar and flue tile has cracked, water runs straight down the outside of the flue and soaks into the masonry.
- Bird or squirrel activity inside the flue. The mesh screen on Gelco caps has gaps sized to keep embers in and critters out. Once the screen tears or separates from the frame, it’s an open invitation. We’ve pulled nests out of flues in Alamo Heights and Terrell Hills during spring service calls.
- Whistling or rattling during wind gusts. The tension bolts loosen over time as the metal expands and contracts with San Antonio’s temperature swings. The cap starts vibrating against the flue tile, which you’ll hear most clearly on the second floor.
- Downdraft smells when a fire isn’t lit. If the cap’s wind band has shifted or the mesh has partially clogged with creosote and debris, airflow reverses. You get a smell like a fireplace that was used last week, even when it’s been months.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
At Alcott Chimney San Antonio, a standard Gelco single-flue cap replacement runs $245 to $420 installed. Multi-flue and draft-increasing Gelco models run $380 to $620, since the hardware is heavier and the mounting sequence takes longer to do right. You get a written price before any work starts, no exceptions.
Every Gelco cap installation includes the cap itself, stainless steel mounting hardware, removal of the failed unit, and verification that the new cap seats level on the flue tile. We don’t charge extra to haul the old one away. Every install carries our 365-Day Done Right Promise: if the cap shifts, rattles, or doesn’t hold up during the first year, we come back and fix it free. If it fails because we made a mistake on installation, the second visit doesn’t cost you a dime.
The price range mostly comes down to roof pitch and flue accessibility. A single-story with a walkable roof runs at the low end. A steep pitch on a two-story in Stone Oak or a flue with an unusual tile size pushes toward the top.
DIY or Call Us?
You can safely do a visual check from ground level. Walk around the house, look for rust streaks or a cap that’s obviously tilted, and snap some photos. That’s genuinely useful and helps us quote the job accurately.
What we don’t recommend is getting on the roof yourself to swap the cap. Not because we want the work. Because a failed Gelco cap is usually the easy part, and the hard part is what you can’t see from a ladder: cracked flue tiles, corroded mounting bolts that snap when you try to loosen them, and chimney crowns that have shifted without telling anyone. Twice last year Ruben Castellano and our crew found flue tiles that were cracked underneath caps that looked fine from the ground. If that’s your chimney, a DIY swap just puts a new lid on a worsening firebox and flue problem.
If the cap is still solid and you’re just noticing light surface rust, you can leave it alone and keep an eye on it. If water is getting inside or animals have made it past the screen, call us at (903) 515-5079 and we’ll take a camera up there and show you exactly what we see.
FAQs
A Gelco cap in San Antonio typically lasts 8 to 14 years before rust or hardware fatigue requires replacement. Homes that face direct west sun or sit in hail corridors lose caps faster. The powder coat fades and gets brittle, then oxidation starts on the bolt heads and seams.
Sometimes, when the issue is loose tension bolts or a tear in the mesh screen, we can repair it with Gelco-matched hardware rather than replace the whole cap. If the metal has started to rust through or the collar doesn’t seat firmly anymore, replacement is cheaper in the long run than a repair that waits a year to fail again. Call (903) 515-5079 and we’ll tell you which one you have.
Most single-flue Gelco cap installations are done in 45 to 90 minutes from setup to cleanup. Multi-flue caps that need custom sizing run longer because we measure twice before drilling anything. You’ll have a written price before the work starts, and the price doesn’t change mid-job.
Yes. Our trucks carry the common Gelco sizes: 8×8, 8×13, 9×13, and 13×13. If your flue tile is an odd size, we’ll get the right cap delivered to our shop within a few days and schedule the install once it’s in hand. We also stock replacement parts for DuraFlex and HeatShield systems, so if the cap failure is related to a liner issue, we can address both at once.
Water gets into the flue, mixes with creosote, and turns acidic. That eats at mortar joints and flue tiles, which eventually requires a liner or partial rebuild. Birds bring nesting material that blocks airflow and creates a carbon monoxide risk. Rust expands and cracks the crown. The cap is the cheapest part of all of that to replace. If you’re unsure whether yours is bad enough to matter, call (903) 515-5079 and we’ll take photos up close so you can see it for yourself before deciding.
