Worth knowing

Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.

HeatShield Chimney Cap Installation: The San Antonio Owner’s Guide

If you have a HeatShield chimney cap that’s rusted through, dented, or missing entirely, we stock HeatShield-compatible caps in San Antonio and typically complete the full installation in one visit. Installed pricing generally runs $295 to $545 depending on the cap size, mounting surface condition, and whether we’re replacing the cap only or also addressing the crown underneath. The call usually starts the same way: you spotted water in the firebox after a heavy rain, or you looked up and noticed the cap is leaning like it’s about to drop into the flue.

HeatShield makes a solid cap, but nothing survives forever on a San Antonio roof. Between the July sun baking the powder coat and the sudden downpours that hit the northwest side, caps fail at screws, seams, and mesh joints first. Alcott Chimney San Antonio installs these caps as an independent service provider, not as a HeatShield dealer or affiliate. That matters because we choose the right cap for the flue rather than forcing whatever’s on hand, and we pair it with the HeatShield resurfacing system when the flue tiles need treatment at the same time.

Which HeatShield Models This Applies To

HeatShield chimney caps come in a few distinct configurations, and the install hinges on matching the cap to the flue tile dimensions, not the brand decal on the old one. We commonly install the HeatShield standard single-flue caps (fits flue tiles from 8″ x 8″ to 13″ x 13″ outside dimensions) and the multi-flue styles used on older San Antonio homes with two or three flue tiles clustered together.

The compatibility gotcha most owners hit: HeatShield caps are sized for standard square and rectangular clay flue tiles, but many 1950s-era homes in Alamo Heights and Terrell Hills have non-standard tile sizes or cracked crowns that require a custom mounting plate. If your flue tile measures outside the standard range, or if the crown is spalling, the cap alone won’t seal correctly. We’ll measure on site and tell you honestly if a standard cap fits or if you need a custom base fabricated. Aftermarket caps made to HeatShield’s spec are available from brands like Gelco and Olympia Chimney, but we carry the HeatShield line specifically because the mesh gauge and stainless steel grade hold up in San Antonio’s temperature swings better than the thinner box-store versions.

Another gotcha: HeatShield caps for pre-fab fireplaces use a different mounting collar than masonry chimney caps, and they’re not interchangeable. If you’ve got a zero-clearance fireplace with a round metal flue pipe, that’s a different cap entirely. Bring us a measurement or a photo of the label inside the existing cap before you order anything yourself; we’ll tell you exactly what fits.

Signs Your HeatShield Chimney Cap Installation Is Failing

  • Rust streaks running down the cap sides or the crown. This usually means the powder coat has degraded and the steel underneath is oxidizing. Once the rust starts at a weld point, the mesh will begin separating from the frame within a year or two.
  • Water in the firebox after rain. The cap’s primary job is keeping rain out of the flue. If you’re seeing water, the cap may be undersized for the flue tile, the mounting legs have shifted, or the seal between cap and crown has failed.
  • Visible daylight through the mesh or side panels. Birds and squirrels only need a gap the size of your thumb to get into a flue. If the mesh is torn or the side panels have pulled away from the frame, you’ve got a pest entry point, not just a cosmetic issue.
  • The cap is leaning or rotated on the flue tile. San Antonio storms with straight-line winds can wrench caps off their mounting screws. When a cap shifts even an inch, the gaps around the base let water run directly down the outside of the flue tile, into the chase or the masonry.
  • Spark or ember particles on the roof after fires. The mesh is meant to arrest sparks before they reach your roof. If the mesh is compromised, you’re burning a genuine fire hazard every time you light a fire in a dry Texas summer.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

In San Antonio, our typical installed price for a HeatShield-compatible chimney cap replacement lands between $295 and $545. That’s parts, labor, and the trip. The cap itself usually accounts for 40% to 60% of the total depending on the size. Anything bigger than a standard 13″ x 13″ flue tile, or a multi-flue cap that needs a full-width mounting rail, can push toward $600 to $750. If the crown needs patching, that’s a separate line item, but we’ll price it out before we start.

Every estimate is written, priced, and handed to you before the work begins. No surprise line items at the end. We carry HeatShield replacement caps on our service trucks: the common sizes in stainless and black are on board on day one. Odd sizes may require a follow-up visit, but we’ll tell you that before you book, not after we’re on the roof.

The labor includes removing the old cap, cleaning the flue tile top, dry-fitting the new cap, and securing it with stainless mounting screws at correct torque. We don’t use silicone as a substitute for proper mechanical fastening. If we use a sealant at the base, we’ll explain how it’s meant to shed water, not weld the cap in place. And every single installation carries our 365-Day Done Right Promise. If the cap shifts, leaks, or loosens within the year, we come back and fix it at no charge. The guarantee is written, not verbal, and it covers the work we perform, not just the part.

DIY or Call Us?

If you’re comfortable on a ladder, here’s what you can safely check before calling us: look for rust streaks, tears in the mesh, missing screws, and gaps between the cap base and the flue tile. Take photos. That’s helpful and it’s safe. What we don’t recommend is climbing onto a second-story roof with a drill and a replacement cap in your other hand. Roof work in San Antonio means steep pitches on Spanish tile and composite shingle, and changing a cap involves working directly above an open flue with limited footing. At best, it’s an afternoon you’ll wish you’d skipped. At worst, it’s a fall you don’t climb back up from.

If you have a single-story home with easy roof access and you’re genuinely confident doing this, you can buy a cap from a retail supply house. The honest caveat is that the sheet metal gauge and mesh hole sizing on box-store caps isn’t up to our San Antonio hail season. The labor cost we charge isn’t just for the part; it’s the year of accountability that comes after the install. If you’d rather not gamble, call us at (903) 515-5079. We’ll get you a real price, not a pitch.
